My first idea was more like a traditional superhero team: sort of an occult detective version of Challengers of the Unknown or the Fanatstic Four. This is probably the second drawing of Hellboy - less hairy and not drooling but a long way from what he is today. This is the first drawing of Abe and Liz. The other two guys wouldn't make it into the book but would eventually evolve into characters in the BPRD series -- the guy with the gun would turn into Daimio and the guy with the '80s New Wave haircut into Johann. I tried to come up with a name for this group but just couldn't do it. Everything sounded silly. I finally decided to downplay the team and stick to the name Hellboy. Nice and simple, and it still made me laugh".

Is he drawing all of that? Though a Dave Sim comic without Dave Sim lettering is almost not a Dave Sim comic. Rambling and unwieldly there are a few excellent stretches in there about comics history.

That still gets rid of a lot of nuance, but I can see why they chose to forgo it.
