I don't think that there should be a list of things that kids shows should and shouldn't do. Otherwise you end up with cartoons that were obviously made by people who grew up in front of a tv.

It's a reality some kids have to live with. Sesame Street has always been about inclusion, not ignoring what some kids go through.

Sesame Street always tackled topics like this so the show's demographic, kids who either can't afford cable or are lacking in proper schooling, can get an understanding on things that most other shows wouldn't tackle as often. There is literally nothing wrong about having discussions like this with children.

I live in Israel and as a kid our Version of Sesame Street told kids that racemixing was wrong and Arabs and blacks are dangerous

That character is in the South African version of Sesame Street and Yes. AIDS is still more rampant in South Africa and the character contracted it due to a blood transfusion as an infant. The purpose was to destigmatize AIDS to kids who will likely run into positive peers.

So much like this segment about prison which will apply to many of the viewers, so too did the South African AIDS segment.
