Combat was lame and if Rebecca wasn't hack she would have pulped fleshy Steven and started over with Pink.

It’s pretty bad, but I have two big problems. The first one is:
>Thus, unlike the unidimensional villains of Batman, Spider-Man, and Justice League—and the retributive justice paradigms they underscore—the “evil” in Steven Universe is not inherent and no one is beyond the redemptive power of empathy, communication, and healing.
The person who wrote this knows nothing about superheroes for claiming Batman, Spider-Man and the Justice League have “one dimensional villains”. The reason their rouges galleries are so iconic is because those villains have depth, way more than the diamonds and lapis. Yeah, the joker is pure evil, but not every villain is the joker. Harley Quinn and Venom are examples of bad guys turned good and characters like Dr. Freeze are beloved for their depth and sympathetic traits. The heroes always want to help their villains as well, it’s why people idolized them.
The second one is the accountability part. SU does not held anyone accountable for anything. Characters are free to abuse others and try to commit genocide due to their trauma, and they are rewarded for their actions because the heroes feel bad about them. The Diamonds and Lapis never are held accountable for their crimes and it undermines the themes of justice, since it’s unjust that victims have to just accept that their abusers won’t be held accountable for their crimes due to their own problems.

It's dangerous to treat criminal acts across the board as symptoms of an affliction. It takes away the autonomy of the criminal and treats their choices--their free willed choices--as something they need to be cured of. It's dehumanizing.

Great analysis. Unfortunately, i don't like the writing and character interactions of this show, so i don't care

Then it’s not a great analysis since the author is exaggerating over the qualities of the show.

How much free will do you have if you have symptoms of abusive environments without help? Or hunger? Or mental issues that remain undiagnosed? Are you really saying that, in a better situation of living, every single one of them would still chose crime?

A lot of people are just as much victims of innate traits as environment.

But can we help them deal with those traits before they act on perjudicial actions instead of waiting to them actually doing that and dealing with the aftermath?

I want to be completely covered by Blue Diamond's feet.

Psychiatric help for most people would be good.
It's also not realistic.

Literacy for all people wasn't realistic before, but it is now. You'll be surprised how much can be achieved.

Play devil's advocate all you want, but going "OHHH POOR BABY" at genocide is bad.

There's no time man!

Fake, gay and I don't care

Writing always comes first for me, and the writing in SU isn't great. It barely rarely comes to life, if you know what i mean

I think someone from here did this article since a few days ago there was a thread talking about justice in SU.

SU never really resolves any complicated ethical issues it tackles, either forgetting about them or just going "well, that's something I'll have to deal with".

It's general approach to justice is characters being nice people now, possibly trying to fix bad things they've done as a fun hobby. You've the genocide by the diamonds, jasper doing the gem version of raping Lapis and generally thousands (millions?) of gems who were utterly fucked over by Pink Diamond. There's no consequences or resolution other than an implication characters are just moving on from it.

Steven Universe is one of the worst examples of bulletpointing complex issues. They've raised complex issues, that means its deep! Doesn't really explore those issues or other any insight into them, it just describes the issue, then moves on to the next one.

Quickie with Peridot.

can someone just tell me what the thing says so I don't give this asshole free clicks

Basically saying the US government gives harsh punishments to criminals and SU tells us that we should be more compassionate and be less cruel.

>jasper doing the gem version of raping Lapis
More like the other way around buddy

That is assuming that you believe in free will. But if we believe our brains are molded by genetics and the enviroment then yeah our actions are a product of things beyond our control and is restorative justice what makes the most sense

We should be more practical and do what actually gets results. Decades of punitive justice have demonstrated to fail when it comes to making people not be criminals.

How can you tell if you have free will or not?
