because nannies exist? people had em?
and black people typically did those kinda jobs because they had no education for anything else

I love how these types of characters are now considered offensive and racist, but depicting black women as bitches and hoes is perfectly acceptable.

interestingly the nanny (idk her real name or what other episode she appeared in, can anyone let me know?) isnt even that offensive. shes just drawn the way most black people were drawn back in the day, and so are other archetypes like audrey's mom, the lifeguard, even audrey herself. sure it seems offensive to us now but back then it was simply the stylization of black features. and yet the character herself? isnt offensive at all? shes not done badly or hatefully or nothing. in fact a lot of 'racist' characters werent. they just looked or spoke like caricatures because again thats how we saw em, but it wasnt out of a place of hatred but morose just that being the way of life and we used to present a lot of things inelegantly

aside from the looks and accent, this nanny reminds me of a few of my own nannies i had as a kid, and they were all russian. she just acts like a regular old lady

Mammy characters are tricky in that they are typically the good character. 30s and 40s characters tend to be outright assholes or jerks

I really liked her as a kid. I never knew she was a mammy trope. She reminded me of my grandmother who had similar attitude as her.

honestly the 'mammy' is nothing more than a normal old back woman who acts the way they, and even just older women and general, often might. back in that era a lot of kids grew up with them as maids, nannies, cooks or other kinds of caretakers and so recognize that type of personality. we dont really have em but we still relate em to other older ladies we know
