The lore is sloppy but the village mostly trade by barter in many books, like "can I pay you with a menhir/fish" and such. But in different other stories they do use coins too, so my guess is that the inner economy is based on barter, but when they deal with outsiders, they trade with coins. They are against taxes though, as seen in the cauldron comics.
