He was an asshole. He may have become that way because he was lonely, and he may have been lonely because of a shitty childhood, but he never made any real attempt to address those issues or to better himself.
Things like childhood trauma and loneliness have a lot to answer for, but if you aren't prepared to work on yourself at all then ultimately the problem is you.

A bit of both. Like, yeah, he was an asshole, but the guy was never being a problem for anyone. He was uncouth, crude and irritable, but he paid the bills, paid his taxes where it wasn't avoidable and he seemingly never went out of his way to cause trouble. If anything, the guy just wanted to be left alone to work out of the home and enjoy a good pigskin game on TV, some porn and the occasional hooker.
An asshole? Yes. Misunderstood? Yes, but he did nothing wrong in the grand scheme of things that affected anyone but himself.

He was definitely an asshole, though a sad one. He's a genuinely lonely person and you can see when the Aqua Teens aren't around to bother him, his life is extremely sad and directionless, and his childhood was extremely toxic.
Even then, that doesn't justify some of the nasty shit he's done, like ruining the life of his happy counterpart and making him commit suicide, or taking advantage of his dying mother who had only taken care of him his whole life.
He's a complicated guy with a lot of issues.
