My guess is that Krayt, Talon and Nihl were the first Sith to be designed, and after the fact they decided that all future Sith were Darth Maul fanboys, but they didn't bother changing Krayt and Nihl's design to reflect that.

Basically, Lucasarts was pitching a Darth Maul game to Lucas, and George Lucas looked over, saw a Darth Talon statue, picked it up, put it next to the Darth Maul Statue and went "Hey look! They're friends!" Lucas then told the office that they should make their dynamic be central to the game, which the employees tried to explain how they lived centuries apart, but Lucas put his foot down. The game was obviously canceled.
The whole "Darth Maul's Best Friend" thing has been a running gag with my friend.
