I guess it depends on the form of media. It seems like there has been more of a hardcore push for lesbianism specifically in cartoons recently to the point where cartoon fans are all a bit sick of it. There are lesbians in adult dramas and so forth but it seems a bit more balanced with other sexual proclivities. Whereas with toons it's a cliche at this point.

The real irony is lesbianism has been a frequent thing in media as far back as the late 1800s, notably with Carmilla.
It was a go-to shock tactic in literature, transitioned over to screen predominantly in the 1970s with hints of it in the 50s and 60s.
The 90s especially went utterly full force as social attitudes towards homosexuality changed. It was an easy way to shock and arouse the audience without pushing away too much of the market, but two gay men kissing was often a no-go because it turned the audience away.
This is why the gaysplosion was predominantly lesbians when the woke wave came in the 2010s, because while not a card they played often, lesbians were a tried and true move to drum up controversy around a film without actually hurting box office by that point
