If it happens, I’d be fine with that, though it might revamp the character. Why would he have been shot? Did he commit a crime or was it an accidental shooting? Will it commentate on the issues of police brutality or corruption in a way that isn’t too preachy and reasonable, or will it be an echo chamber to pander to misinformed teenagers and anarchists that have overtaken the BLM slogan and rather than making it an actual symbol of equality, have turned it into a symbol of anarchy which has been only giving more power to the corrupt racists and power hungry political snakes. These are the questions that would need to be answered in order to make this storyline work for the character and the audience. I’d just hope they’d tackle the political message behind it with at least some intellectual forethought and morality.

I think that a shooting isn't enough. Like, look at cyborg. Just think about how many bullets he would have had to been filled with to require that level of body replacement. Thats not something you do to someone who got shot in the back a couple of times.
What you'd have to do is something like he gets shot by an idiot cop trained to shoot first and ask question later, and then the police decide to dispose of the body rather than take the heat for killing this guy. They don't realize that he's actually still alive at this point, and its their attempt to dispose of the body that does the real physical damage that leads to him needed all of these cybernetics.
Bam. Now you have a storyline thats not just about police violence, but also about the police evading punishment for their abuses of power. Which is an important subject to touch on, because even if you were to take away the racism element from recent events its really obvious that the police have gotten waaaay too comfortable with the idea of themselves being above punishment and actively resisting any attempt to hold their members accountable for their fuckups.
