Season 1 BTAS thread
I really like the invisible man episode, no one talk about it that much but i like the ex con abusive father narrative
Another cool one is the first episode. Great animation there and some mad scientist
shenanigans (this trope gets repeated a lot after that tho)
is death preferable to being batman?
Also he's invisible because he's an absent father, so he's invisible to the girl in that way. Heavy shit.
That was a good episode, I think most of the episodes with one-off characters/villains are pretty underrated really
>entire lifetime how training
>study and workout basically every hour of the day
>never can let go of traumatic event
>spends every night with criminals and surrounded by tragedy
>gets to bone top models now and then to keep up appearances
It all balances out.
I will always love the bit where Batman is riding the invisible car and some drunk hobos think he's flying.
I don't like how that episode focuses on the Invisible guy at first, seemingly framing him as sympathetic and then does a complete turnaround and tries to make us care about his generic family.
P.O. V - Basically just for its unique storytelling approach.
Two-Face - The voice acting for Harvey is fantastic. That scream he lets out at the hospital is pure kino.
Heart of Ice - obvious reasons.
Mad as Hatter - perfect origin for the Hatter
Almost Got'Im - obvious reasons
Fire from Olympus - I like rouge centric episodes. Especially if they are about more obscure rouges and especially when they are so well done like this one.
Read my Lips - Scarface seems to be in this weird limbo of mainstay rouge and obscure villain. I like that he played a more major part in BTAS.
The laughing fish - One of the best Joker stories in my opinion. The whole plan is just so ridiculous that it fits Joker perfectly.
Feat of Clay - obvious reasons.
Robins Reckoning - obvious reasons
Are all those in S1? Holy shit.
according to the wiki - yes
I like the one were batman said "I like beer"
Not sure if it was season 1 but Clayface was tragic as fuck.
Think back to when I was a kid and this used to be on CN. Think the Clay face episode was always played.
For some reason that episode always made me sad and scared
1)Feat of Clay - the soundtrack, the body horror and that one scene that blew the budget and keeps getting reposted.
2) Nothing to Fear - Batman overcomes fear gas. I love the monologue where he finally breaks fears' hold, and as a plus it's the one time he actually says "I am the night"
3) Robin saves the Superbowl. The play-by-play about picking up the fumble is juxtaposed expertly
4) Two-Face: I like seeing Harvey's mask slip, especially the "you're talking to the wrong Harvey" part
5) Heart of Ice - nuff said
6) Joker's Favor - possibly the funniest one here
7) Pretty Poison: Ivy before all the bullshit, and one of the best ass-sways I've seen in kids media
8) Vendetta: something about this one makes me think of it as one of the more Detective-manga-like episodes. Them not showing Killer Croc until the end makes for good suspense.
9) Clock King: reimagines and rejuvenates a bit Villain
10) Beware the Grey Ghost - nobody messes with Adam We
"On Leather Wings" - It was pretty bold to start off the series with a lesser-known villain and it introduced the fun, incompetent SWAT team.
"Christmas with the Joker" - The best Christmas episode of any animated series, a very fun, yet high-stakes episode.
"Nothing to Fear" - "I am vengeance, I am the night, I am Batman!" I also preferred the simpler early BTAS Scarecrow design.
"It's Never too Late" - In a lot of Batman media the crime bosses are often overshadowed by the big supervillains, and so it's really nice to have an episode that focuses on them.
"Heart of Ice" - It won an Emmy for Christ's sake, who doesn't love this episode?
"Appointment in Crime Alley" - A great story of greed and urban decay.
"Pretty Poison" - Not only was it a good Poison Ivy introduction, having an episode to establish Bruce Wayne and Harvey Dent's friendship and having Batman save Dent raised the impact of Dent becoming Two-Face.
"Two-Face Parts 1 and 2" - A great Two-Face introduction and another good crime boss episode.
"Cat and the Claw Parts 1 and 2" - The dual relationship between Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle is great and the Red Claw plot has a good escalation.
"Feat of Clay Parts 1 and 2" - Edge of your seat tension, great animation on Clayface, a fantastic episode overall.
Bonus shoutout: "Mask of the Phantasm" - Films based on TV cartoons can be rough, and it had a rushed production, but despite that, it turned out to be certified kino. Great early Batman flashbacks, the tense part where Batman is nearly killed by the SWAT team, and a great buildup to an explosive ending made it such a good movie.
Can't really do 10 for season 1 (so here are 6) in no particular order:
1) Heart of Ice
2) Beware the Gray Ghost
3) Mad as a Hatter
4) Harley and Ivy
5) Almost Got 'Im
6) If You're So Smart, Why Aren't You Rich?
This guy right here may be the only Gotham mobster that wasn't pure evil. Very underrated character, I wish we got to see more of him.
the last time i watched this show was in 99 i think. is it worth watching again? i remember really liking it back then, i think it was my favorite show along x-men. can an older audience enjoy it?
Absolutely worth watching again, if anything I'd say an older audience would enjoy it more than a younger audience since it'd probably be a little too slow and atmospheric for kids to appreciate as much, I'd say the writing is geared towards older audiences and the animation is often excellent so there'd be good value in a rewatch
>Christmas with the Joker
The fact that the Joker held the entire city in the grip of fear while holding various important people hostage just so he could pie batman in the face is great.
Laughing Fish is the shit, the comic especially
Currently rewatching this 4 episodes at a time once a week. First time watching it in years. Almost done with season 1. Anyway, so far:
>Heart of Ice
Kind of a perfect Universal Monster movie character origin with a touch of pathos
>Feat of Clay
Best looking episode. Realizes the potential of a character who never really had a chance in the comics.
>Beware of the Gray Ghost
Moving exercise in exposing nostalgia and redemption
>Two-Face
Part two is okay but part one is a taut psychological thriller.
>Clock King
Great setpieces, vision has an amusing/novel motive
>Mad as a Hatter
Memorable origin, cool Sprang-esque finale
>Mudslide
Basically every Clayface episode is cool. This one is a little Twilight Zone-esque.
>Laughing Fish
This is the platonic ideal for Batman vs Joker story. I actually think it's better than the original comic.
>The Man Who Killed Batman
I really like these episodes that focus on characters effected by Batman but not necessarily villains. It's funny too.
>See No Evil
A lot of story packed into this self contained scifi/crime story. That other user is right, it's underrated.
>Heart of Steel
A favorite from my childhood. I remember the cliffhanger in part obe really hooked me and I kept thinking about what would happen next until I finally saw the continuation.
>Appointment in Crime Alley
I really love the times they adapt O'Neil stories into the show
Also Joker's Wild
>Batman goes to the Joker casino just for the purpose of trolling the Joker as Bruce Wayne
Is The New Batman Adventures any similar and good? I know Batman Beyond is where it gets dogshit.
New Batman Adventures is just more BTAS but with different designs, the writing is still the same
There is some serious artistic merit to the show. Not all the episodes are amazing, but you can tell some passion went into it. There's a lot of appeal for adults, like says.
I liked the episode where Sid the Squid kills Batman and the villains gather together to put him on a trial. I liked it because Sid wasn't that bad a guy and he was the straight man in a mad court of fools. Also because it explored the relationship of the villains with Batman. How they actually need him. And it's not a comical, light-hearted thing like in Lego Batman or Venture Bros. They (and Batman) are fucked in the head.
Speaking of Joker's Wild i will forever be butthurt that the blu-ray changed this.
Me and my brother used to watch this episode every Christmas. Good times...
Beyond is really good, it just sucks to see everyone from the original series get fucked over in the future.
