Japanese and American videogames took opposite directions after the PS2/XBOX generation. Japanese games became really cheap and very rarely reach one million sales on the global market because the audience is otaku. Meanwhile American games decided to copy the blockbuster model by having huge budgets and spending even more on publicity. That mean they need to recover the budget on the first week sales so they need a huge hype around the game before the release. Their entire strategy has been erasing the obsessive fans for convincing the mainstream that videogames are "cool" now, open to all the demographics. Western games sell around 20 to 40 millions copies. As you can see, it's apples and oranges
