For all of Thanos' appearance they were mostly just when Starlin was working on Marvel. Everything else was a joke. The only Starlin approve Thanos is Englehart's in the Avengers. Squirrel Girl, Spidey Super Stories, Ka-Zar and the Dan Jurgen's Thor issue are not Thanos but clones yes I know that's a recon by Starlin but let's take a look at the actual appearances. Thanos was not used as a cosmic be and end all type of character like he is now, rather he was just some powerful character used to put over or job to another character. Thanos wasn't all over the Marvel Universe he just fought most of them in Starlin's Infinity trilogy but that's like saying Punisher kills the Marvel Universe. While one was canon the other was set on an alternative earth of 95126. The point is you didn't have to buy into the event, now you can't escape Thanos anywhere you go in the Marvel franchise.

It's not Starlin's fault it the movie synergy's fault. Marvel doesn't even like Starlin they much preferred printing Cates' story over Starlin's. They only need Starlin to keep republishing Infinity Gauntlet.
