Craig McCracken has always seemed like a straight shooter who just unfortunately ( and eventually) gets hosed by whatever channel he works for at the time.
Charles Schulz is the most classical example I can think of; dude had a helluva awkward life and managed to turn himself around to make one of the greatest comic strips of all time without a bunch of dead hookers in the basement. The worst thing I can think of that he's ever done was make a combo animated/live action TV special for his daughter to star in, which, honestly, that's not so bad.
Stan Sakai is a great dude and Usagi Yojimbo is like... agreed upon to be one of the best series ever by like 99% of Zig Forums...
Also, Mary Cagle? The Sleepless Domain/Let's Speak english lady? Everybody on here seems to like her.

I know it's manga but you gotta admire the simplistic dedication of Akira Toriyama. Dude just wanted to draw things he thought were cool and fun. He wrote things on the fly just so he could keep drawing. And it worked, since Dragon Ball is still going.
