It definitely took a lot of notes from taxi driver and king of comedy.
The movie fails to stand on its own because it wears its influences very heavily and the batman mythos actively detracts from the overall narrative in my opinion.
Its almost a great movie and as a BPD cunt with familial issues I feel for Arthur, but its just not the most well done movie for me.

Joker is a nihilistic take on what causes the mental and moral downfall of someone without giving a clear answer as to who or what is to blame and overcome to change things for the better. Tumblr brainlets need scapegoats and bogeymen so they can frame their own shortcomings and frustrations with the world into narratives where they can be a victim or hero fighting evil. jokers downfall is attributed to every group and aspect of society and gives no clear bogeyman, the poor rob him, the rich villanize him, his family abused him, strangers mock him, no one clear cause. Arthur is also too sympathetic to be a stand in for a bogeyman himself. He’s not a racist, he’s not a bully, he’s earnest, he’s the underdog. The tumbler toddlers might be okey with a character beaten down by a ruthless word as a story but only if that character is representative of the groups of people they believe to be the victimized ones irl. Arthur is a Cis white man and that doesn’t fit their victim narratives, they could look past it because he’s poor and has problems with mental health but then the movie frames his violent breakdown and rejection of the world in a negative way and that hurts their narratives even more so they can’t deal with it.

TLDR: joker doesn’t support their narratives and is therefore useless to their self reassuring obsession
