Have you ever held a hockey club? They're not exactly axes, I'm actually a little impressed that a small kid could do that with a hockey club. I know seals are slow and all but still.

Hockey sticks aren't terribly heavy, you're right, but you're probably overestimating how solid a seal's skull is. He also could have, say, stunned it with the stick and then stomped on it or something.
