The peninsula separates the Atlantic Ocean from the Uruguay River. The Riverside has smaller waves and its the preferred beachfront for tourists. The Oceanside has big waves which sometimes flood the streets and it has an unbearable fish and crab smell, only surfers and fishermen go there.

Lol, I remember when I was a teen and was visiting Punta del Este with my family in the 80's, the waves were fucking gigantic and everyone was advised to stay away, but I went inside the water anyways because I wanted to prove I was courageous or some shit, I almost ended up dying when a big wave swiped me down and caught me in an underwater current
