The Ottoman (Turkish) empire started falling apart in the 1700s and that continued up till the end of WW1. Greece won its independence in the early 1800s (1820ish I think), but it was just a tiny part of what is the modern country of Greece. But Greece and other Balkan countries (as well as Russia, Austria) kept chipping away and reconquering land from the Turks all throughout the 1800s early 1900s. Then at the end of WW1 Turkey lost, and a lot of land was to be given to Greece (as well as other European countries). But Ataturk became leader of Turkey and fought back the Greeks and others to get Turkey's modern borders. Then the deported almost all the Greeks that were still remaining in Turkey.

Basically, after WW1 was over the Ottomans ceeded a lot of Land to Georgia, Armenia, and Greece. A lot of this land was historically theirs but after hundreds of years of Ottoman rule and genocides during ww1 the smaller countries severely lacked in demographics. Ataroach was the general that went to war with them. They call it "independence war" because it sounds better than "kill off all Armenians from their homeland and declare war on what's left war". Turks received arms from Bolsheviks and in exchange they gave up what ended up as today's Azerbaijan. The Greeks lost the war and ended up giving that part to Turkey.
