The New Territories were only ever leased for 99 years. The UK had to give them back.

Kowloon and Hong Kong Island could not exist without the New Territories and so it made sense hand them over at the same time.

I don't remember that happening, the expedition was almost canceled so many times, the logistics was ridiculous.
A nuclear attack would turn the entire region against them, they never even dare to bomb the mainland.
Argentina had an alieance with the US, in theory the shoud have remained neutral and attack on mainland whoud make the US position more difficult.
