Right, but most Americans are unaware of that. Most Americans think Nazis were evil people who hated Jews and Gays but lived well. Most people here think the Soviet Union was oppressive, poor, miserable and destitute for pretty much every one.

If I had to pick an 20th century oppressive state to live in I'd have picked Francoist Spain. Still not a particularly big fan of him either, but Spaniards had more freedom and a higher quality of life than most other closed off authoritarian regimes of the time.

UK never liked commies, they saw the Third Reich as the counterbalance to the USSR, and as the lesser evil.
However it didn't go as planned when Hitler signed a non-agression pact with the USSR and invaded Poland.
After the war both the US and the UK decided that they need Germans as the allies and decicded not to demonize them further and ignore some of the stuff that nazis did. Hence you have shit like "Myth of the clean Wehrmacht"

Unfortunately this paved the road to the nazi sympathizers and nazi apologists in the US.
As of right now Americans DO have a positive view of Nazi Germany and there are a lot of unironic wehraboos in the US.
Just as a comparison, most post soviet states view DDR positively but you will never find a single person who would consider Nazi Germany a good thing.
