Being an island is a strong defence against conventional invasions for a start, meaning that focus can be shifted to other priorities, and also that any conflict we did end up in could be made more limited in scope, allowing for incremental expansions of influence.
I've also seen it argued before that this country had a much longer term strategy than most european nations at the time, exemplified by how comparatively few non-british settler colonies exist.

We used warships to stop the slave trade and let most our colonies go without a fight. No other empire in history had done that, including our European contemporaries. We're too empathetic for our own good.

Anglos are gonna reply to my post and say it's cope, but basically it's because they're an island.
So instead of focusing all their ressources on a powerful army to protect their borders like we, the germans, the spaniards, the russians etc had to do, they built the greatest fleet in the world which helped them hinder rival colonial powers and win colonial wars easily. They also didn't really need a particularly strong army to colonize stuff because european technology and military tradition was far superior to the rest of the world's.
Also the fact that they didn't give two shits about slaughtering natives and stealing their lands, but many countries troughout history did that.

The overwhelming majority of the Empire was spoils of war from conflicts with other European powers.
It was really only the Australias that were settled without resistance.

But it is true.
The Empire at its peak was in 1921.
Canada was mostly ceded by France after the Seven Years' War. The Caribbean changed hands many, many times between various European countries, mostly France and Spain. South Africa was conquered during the War of the First Coalition, after France had invaded the Netherlands and set up a puppet republic. The Near East and parts of West Africa were spoils from conflict with the Central Powers in WWI, mostly the decaying Ottomans, albeit led by a German staff. India had a large European presence divided between France, Portugal and the Netherlands, and it was by no means certain that England or Great Britain would be the last one standing.

But those wars england won weren't land wars that england won in europe, I'm not trying to diminish your people's accomplishements, I'm just saying they're mostly due to the british fleet.
