Neofolk does not denote what you think it does. Neofolk initially meant ''industrial folk'', thus an abbrasive, harsh and experimental take on contemporary folk/singer-songwriter music. Many of those pioneering neofolk artists like Death In June, Current 93 and Sol Invictus happened to apply Nazi, Romanticist, Occult and Pagan aesthetics to their music for shock effect (this was common among all early Industrial subgenres) so that nowadays we have a wave of bands whose connotation with the genre is entirely based upon those ideological markers
