Yeah obviously eating a balanced diet is better than eating literally only sugar. But it's inane to say sugar is the only reason people are overweight. The rising rates of obesity are largely due to people leading increasingly sedentary lifestyle and increasing portion sizes. A 16oz soda is somehow seen as a completely normal size now. Coca-Cola marketed the same exact size bottle as a Family Size in 1950s, a child size soda at McDonalds today is 12oz where as the only size you could get in 1955 was a 7oz.
