Because every single power that reaches to the top regrets it. Do you know what happened under the Pax Romana? Multiple civil wars. When a country does not have any real rivals, any real competition, the only rivals are within the own borders of the power. Britian only avoided this because they never kept too much power in their hands.

Technically the US itself has been abdicating it’s role because the world pissed off the US first. Before any of the wars and drama after the Berlin Wall fell, europe as thanks for helping out in the Cold War, and helping to rebuild Europe as a first world and prosperous nationa with the help of the dollars and Free Trade full allowed by the American military using its money to protect the ocean for all, they created a currency in an attempt to dethrone the and take some of prosperity of the dollar. Then China began fucking around with spy planes in the South China Sea. Only Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Japan, and Korea have been actual allies that haven’t been spiting it ever since the Berlin Wall fell. The EU has been inherently parasitic, their entire institution has relied on the American system but goes out of its way to spite the US, only crying to the US when it messed up. I’m sorry most the world is not our friend.
