Were the east gernic people all that much different from slav invaders? They outlasted countless invasions, existed for milenia and then slavs come and after a decade their culture is gone. So either there was an ethic cleansing on a scale (relative to population density at that time of course) that makes holocaust look like a joke, or their culture was barely distiguishable from slavic one and thus they had no issue identifying themselves with slavs. Since we flound no evidence of a large scale extermination, we must assume the latter happened. Remeber primitive tribal people tend to be polyglots and speak six languages on average, so linguistical differences might not be as big of a barrier for assimilation back then.
