that makes perfect sense. I was thinking in terms of "-たい" and "-たがっている" but I don't think it works. the に here is also quite confusing for me. I guess it's the same as in 先生に本を読まされた right?

Rule of thumb is that you should never use たい to refer to someone else wanting something (unless you're directly quoting in a sub-clause quote). You should use 欲しい or がる form depending on the context/situation. This is because たい is a very strong conjugation and it'd be rude to assume with certainty what someone else wants to do.
Same reason why we use と思っている instead of と思う when referring to a third party, because we cannot know directly what they are actually thinking.
