No. In the UK if a holiday does fall on the weekend, you get the next Monday off. This only affects Christmas and New Years but it also means you can have like a week off if you're lucky.

It never attacked another country (the only German state to claim this honour) and with full unemployment, no homelessness and a meaningful social life free of capitalist poison, I would say citizens of the GDR were much freer than you or I.
