I believe Greek people have made an extraordinary contribution to humanity throughout their history, and should be given special treatment by the rest of us. Especially as a European, I believe they are a Chosen People instead of some desert dwellers.

They spoke Greek as part of high society. Latin was used on the floor of the Senate from the earliest republican days until Heraclius' rule. You would be laughed out the Senate house or ridiculed for speaking Greek in the Senate.
