When you travel to foreign countries, do you stick to the touristy areas or do you see the real country you're in?

The only way is to get shitfaced with the locals. Trying to go 'off the beaten path' is bullshit. Locals don't even go off the beaten path. Get drunk with them if you want the real experience. Helps if you speak their language. In fact, going to any place without speaking the language is pretty pointless unless you're just going on holiday.

It depends on the country. I strayed from touristy areas in the DR and I wouldn’t do that again but I would in Italy.

The heart of a country for me lies in it's scenery and countryside but there's nothing wrong with doing both.

Walked all over Greece basically, was still a nice place and there was this one kino sandwich place - da best sandwiches I've ever had. In Germany I stayed in my grandmother's sister's place (cozy little village near gladbach called Steinhausen) and I visited Köln, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Dahrmstadt - so I got a good idea of it.

Of course the poo is defending stinking odors plauging the streets.

I lived in italy for a year. a lot of places smell like shit and are muddy and dirty. pretty much every city with 600 year old infrastructure is like that.

Shitalians reek from miles away after sweat, garlic and dried up olive oil in their greasy hairs.

I usually visit few main touristic attractions, go for a couple of walks around residental areas to see how are things going, but overall I spend most of the time hiking and enjoying nature.

This, i regret travelling most of Europe.
Only sunny med countries were nice, everything else was old buildings and vapid castles and boring history.
Best time i had was in south France, southern and northern Italy, Croatia.
