I don’t really give a shit what any “index” or “rating” says as I’m quite certain that we have far more freedom than at least most European countries but it’s true that we have significantly less than we used to have if you define freedom in a certain way.

These rankings are obviously a joke. There's no way europeans who live in literal police states are freer than latin americans. Of course the methodologies used in these rankings ignore that and equate "freedom" to stuff that has nothing to do with it

Freedom is difficult to quantify. I think the left does more to get rid of freedom of speech in the US than the right. Some part of the left in the US is more rabid, about trans rights, their stance on African American issues etc. than in Europe.

In the Netherlands it is illegal to discriminate, I think the US is getting in dangerous waters discriminating against people on the grounds of political affiliation.

You get fined for holocaust denial in Germany. Will you get fined pissing on a grave in the USA?
You don't get fined for hatespeech. You can get fined for steering up the masses to commit genocide.

I'm not sure about that. Political opinions in Europe vary wildly. There are some very right wing parties here, the most right wing are in Eastern Europe though.

In the US there are two political parties that have any place in the political system, in Europe there are hundreds. It makes it hard to compare.
