It's not because of inspiration from the media, or access to guns, or mental health, if any of those were the reason then you would see even a fraction as much of this in other western nations where the conditions are similar, in those regards, such as Canada. This, there are a lot of copycat cases too. Same for school shootings, they are often some kind of revenge fantasy that is enabled by the fact that these guys become global news for years or even decades to come. For fucks sake, "Pumped up kicks" is about the Columbine shooters and it's a relatively recent song. These Columbine nigga's have become global pop culture icons, even down to their iconic outfits.

That, and mental health in the US (especially for men) is fucking atrocious (not that other Western countries are any better when it comes to the gender divide, but at least they're better in overall quality). It's easy to blame the NRA and ignore the fact that the pharmaceutics lobby is fucking massive and nearly all school shooters of the past 30 years were on some kind of anti-psychotics.

I did a google search and I mixed up two facts in my head. The "all school shooters in the past 30 years" thing applies to them being raised by single mothers (with the exception of one, and I think even his parents died when he was young).

The US had a serial killer "epidemic" on the latter part of the last century it died down after the media stopped giving them so much attention, it obviously isn't the only cause for mass shootings but it certainly is what inspires copycats and those who do it for attention
