That's probably more accurate. The original remake movies were basically tough girl movies though they still kept their femininity and there was no bullshit about them being oppressed and feeling like they need to rise up against the patriarchy. They were strong, capable women and that didn't need to be highlighted or addressed.

I can't say for sure, I don't tend to watch too many 'franchised' films and female remakes almost always are. Definitely the ones from the last few years but there didn't seem to be female remakes before the 'stronk independent woman' thing.
Honestly even female lead movies from just the last few years were met with acclaim like Arrival. It really is a matter of content, and to some degree saturation. There have always been 'strong' females like Ripley from Alien, but they exist more in TV because Television has always had an easier time catering to women. It's why netflix is such a popular thing with females, its catered more and more to them over the years because they are their biggest demographic. Women have always been less likely to go see a movie and usually just tag along with men.
Even when it comes to the female lead remakes with ham fisted plots they would probably do better if they did one a year instead of 1 a month. It's just too oversaturated, especially since the theme is exactly the same each time now instead of being diverse in its story telling and just happening to star women.
Arrival, Colossal, and Annihilation take gender into account when showcasing their characters actions and motives, but the themes themselves aren't about being a woman like in charlies angels or terminator dark fate. Arrival is just a question about free will, Colossal is about alcoholism, Annihilation is about self destruction.
It wasn't just 'women stronk, men oppressive' over and over again.
