I’m a straight cis woman, and I just want to say how much I love drag. I was always made fun of because of my natural androgyny (no boobs to be found), and I suffered with severe body dysmorphia and bulimia in college. Growing up, there was always a guy poking and prodding me about my body. Gain weight, lose weight.
I remember the day I got my first period just sitting in the garden crying because I didn’t want to be a girl. I didn’t want to have to live being treated as unequal by men. Even at 13 it was “oh but you’re a girl you can’t [insert anything here].”
Drag really helped me see gender in a different light, and it made me okay with being a girl. It showed me that a woman is not one thing. Not just a sex toy. Not less than. There were men presenting as women with more confidence about being a girl than I had ever felt in my life.
For me it was cathartic to see men (queens) breaking gender boundaries and teaching me that I could do the same.
I think a lot of women have insecurity issues caused by straight cis men’s expectations of them. Women are so competitive with one another about looks. Men have made so many feel that our worth is predicated upon appearance, and drag is a (for me) a relief from that. It helped me love my body for what it is. It helped me dismiss the negative opinions of others.
The inherent self acceptance and dismissal of social criticism is really powerful. I wish more men and women watched this show.
