I don't think of them as Elite soldiers. Their recruitment and training is more like a regular troop than special forces like the SAS which is filled with career soldiers.

Alright, since I can't sleep anyway:
The FFL is seen both by his members and the rest of the Ground Army as it's very own thing, which allows it to get away with extremely questionable behavior:
Their basic training is basically 18th-century tier, and probably breaks a fuckton of human right convention France signed.
Most of those that enter have pretty much no emotional attachment to France. The oath of the legion litteraly is "My fatherland is the Legion", and France as a nation is barely mentioned. This, and the fact that everything is done to destroy the past of its soldiers (Reminder that went you enter the legion, you are heavily invited to completly change your name) makes them extremely fanatical TOWARDS the Legion, and only the Legion. This led, among other things, to a military coup of the whole fucking country of Algeria by the FFL.
Their hierarchy is known to be absolute SHIT. Here in France, the overwhelming majority of Officers comes from the same ENGINEERING school which is Saint-Cyr. It is filled with 99% litteral noblemen that happens to be brillant academically speaking, both in French litterature and maths. You can guess that this makes their first years of work in regiment extremely rough, for everyone... well it is the absolute worst in the FFL. Since not one single young Officer wants to join the FFL because of their reputation, they systematically get the worst students of each promotion. Those 60kg weak-bodied young adults now have to lead a section of Chechens,and as you can guess, they only get respect by being absolute cunts, which lead to toxic relation between grunts and officers. Therefore, the whole chain of command is barely effective.
Finally, I would add that we really dislike each others. They see "standard" personel as weak pussies because we didnt went 3 days stuck in a hole without eating everytime a Sgt found dust under our bed, and we see them as litteral retards not capable of expressing themselves like normal adults

The political sphere has been completly traumatized by the Algerian coup, and since then they really intended to keep the FFL as the "mad dogs" of the Republic, without ever really making internal improvement to their situation.
They are basically canon fodder. You'll see them deployed in every external theater there is, but NEVER in French lands. The underlying assumption is that the Government dont trust those folks to not fuck shit up and honestly... they're right
Back in 2015, after the Charlie Hebdo stuff, it has been decided to deploy a fuckton of troops on mainland territory. The FFL, among others, was called to patrol in sensible neighborhood filled with shitskins used to disrespect any form of authority there is.
Something important to understand it that we're not cops. We're told, when patrolling, to not intervene except when shots are fired/about to be fired. The hate-filled retards living in suburbs understood this, and therefore had a blast insulting patrols without any consequences.
Well, the FFL had its own ways... in a week, we reported a rise of 40 000% of soldier-civilian incidents. I had a Ltn once in tears laughing, when he explained to me how he spent a whole fucking day helping a bunch of Ivans to write fake reports like

The FFL was never deployed again on mainland after this glorious week.
