Its strange, but most of the knightly imagery and so on I grew up seeing was actually north italian rather than french or english. I think medieval lower germany/north italy is the most kino setting for the middle ages.

Italian city states were the most influential part of "greater europe" at the time though, and their conflicts werent smaller, Italy was literally the battlefield of most French vs HRE wars, and everyone wanted to have influence or control on the papacy. You dont really get a more central position in europe than them at the time.
