I'd say the current sate of american cartoons is down to the god awful level of nepotism in the animation industy. Alot of the people in charge of developing these projects give all the positions of power to their friends, many of whom all went to the same univeristy (CalArts)

That's just how trends work in general. Happens with anime too. Something popular comes along and changes the trend until that too becomes overdone, then the next trend comes along and the process repeats. This isn't a hard concept to understand.
