Why did nearly every country eventually stripe away the right for civilians to be armed? In the UK civilians use to carry cross bows and shields in the Middle Ages and fire arms were outlawed staring in the 1920s. In Japan people use to carry katanas for protection which was outlawed with the Meiji reforms. In China civilians use to carry Jians or swords around for protection. Gun ownership was pretty widespread during the warlord era until it was outlawed by the communists.
Now pretty much the United States is the only place that allows civilians to be as almost as well armed as its soldiers. What gives, why did the world become so enslaved by states!

Private ownership of weaponry was enshrined from the start, as it was necessary for a settler society. Gun control was pretty much unthinkable until industrialization produced completely settled urban areas like in the old world that became dominated by crime, and even then it was a divisive issue. Anyway, the second amendment has 10, 20 years left in it tops. The justification for its existence is too flimsy in the eyes of most people (who live in urban centers rather than a frontier).

Many already existing gun control acts and laws have been virtually unenforceable in many parts of the country because the police in those areas refuse to comply and because citizens aren't just going to walk up and hand over everything they own. Nothing will happen because the military isn't going to go in systematically and start kicking down sherrif's doors. This isn't an issue of citizens being cowardly, it's more actually the government is cowardly and just passes shit on paper but doesn't follow through and enact it in practice.
