The message of the film was that being rural poor is bad. Which it is, but all the coastal city basedboys on the fourth channel will never understand that.

Tanner knows his nature. He had to make that last stand so toby could escape. Tanner was impulsive and combustible so he took that one golden chance to let Toby have his happy ending.
