I mean in reality once society collapsed, people would probably start doing fucked up shit like that. Honestly, this movie feels way more grounded in reality than any other post apocalypse movie or show I’ve seen.

The man’s goal and sole thing giving him purpose in his life was taking care of his kid and keeping him safe after his wife died. The kid just doesn’t want to die. They don’t have to be going anywhere. It’s pretty established how hopeless their situation really is.

I can't find it, but I remember reading an account from a guy who lived through the Siege of Sarajevo in the 1990s where the city was basically cut off from the outside world for over a year and it was everyman for themselves chaos and he said it pretty much devolved into family and friend networks setting up barricades around their homes to protect against roving gangs and women selling sex for a couple of AA batteries or a bag of flour.
