Just watched the whole thing again recently, still mind boggling how much of a career she has gone on to have.

Pretty much this, she was getting older, wanted a baby and didn't have a ton of options - it was pretty much Mark or Jeff.
Crazy as Mark was she probably decided he was more mature/stable than Jeff, which of course was completely incorrect.

It's truly amazing how frequently she pops up in British media. It's nice to see that an actress can be successful without being attractive, although I suspect it's largely because there is such a limited pool of comic and versatile actresses in British TV/film, and she is by all accounts very agreeable to work with

I wasn't hating on her at all. Just speculating that, despite her gentle charm and general warm presence on screen, she likely would not have had as much success were she in the US.

I get that but surely even the most desperate woman who wants to settle down has some level of standards and would avoid a creep like Mark like the plague.

Series 1-4 were the peak of the show but there were some kino episodes after. The one where they throw the party at their flat is comfy, I also liked the New Years Eve one when Jez puts the sausage in the "okay".

She might have been naive enough to initially be angry by Mark's stalking, but then rationalizing it and figuring he just did it because he really liked her.
I don't have a really good answer but maybe she was willing to give him a pass on some of his earlier autism.
