This. More or less everything that happened in the show will happen in the books. Just differently and different characters will be involved.

I always assumed it was because they hadn't figured out yet whether to keep Stannis around for the next season. If they decided to, they could have just shown Brienne hitting the tree just above his head or something. If not, Stannis is dead, but at least they'd have the option.

The fifth season was just the start of it's decline imo, so I hadn't written it off by Stannis' death desu.

But either way Stannis dying off screen isn't particularly a writing issue, as clearly it didn't pay off at all - and it was essentially right there but not shown definitively, so it just feels like a single death filmed in a way completely detatched to all prior deaths.

Well you can argue about whether 3 or 4 is worse than 1 or 2 if you want, but the drop off at 5 was another level. 3 changed things up, the show was still solid to the end of 4.
