ITT: films that surpass the book
ITT: films that surpass the book
every film is better id better the the book. I cant read
I agree with this opinion, the book is crap and the film is one of the best films ever made.
The Shining.
The book did a better job of explaining the mayors motivations for keeping the beach open due to mob pressure from NYC
I can't call it crap for spawning the film, but it is full of junk IIRC. Like passages about Brody's wife hearing him piss, and Hooper fucking her.
It's not a necessary subplot. "The town needs the money" is enough of a motivation.
I’ll say it once: Shawshank Redemption
I mean Stephen King isn't exactly Lovecraft. He writes pretty middlebrow stuff but it's somewhat enjoyable nonetheless. I wouldn't expect anything more from him.
>The part in the book where his whore wife is driving on her way to cheat on him and she thinks how if she dies in a crash they'll find her corpse and notice her wet cunt
Hooper doesn't fuck her, she teases him to reassure herself that she's still got it, and that becomes a basis of tension on the boat. But the shark is honestly enough.
Headhunters. I read the original novel and others by Jo Nesbø but I honestly found him to be a pretty boring crime writer. The film adaptation is miles better, particularly due to the great casting.
The Ninth Gate, holy shit I hate that book
obligatory
i wish the movie included more of the historical stuff from the book as well as eli's original handler turning into a sex-crazed abomination, but other than that the visual medium was much more effective in showing the bleakness of the setting
Logan’s Run
Fight Club.
>mercerists
>penfield mood organs
blade runner is better than dadoes.
absolutely. the book ends with a little-too-sugary scene of Jack Torrance fighting off the influence of the Overlook to blow up the building, redeem himself and save his family. the whole thing is also not that scary. they recycled that ending for Doctor Sleep (which I felt could have used a little more love) but it feels more fitting for Danny instead of his dad.
Yes he does. Brody gets cucked in the book.
The Godfather. In the book Sonny's girlfriend has to get surgery on her vagina cause it was stretched out too much and he devotes pages to this. Worse than that she ends up marrying the Jew doctor after the operation. Even fucking Coppola told Puzo no that he wasn't gonna adapt that garbage so Coppola was pretty based and Mario Puzo couldn't write for shit
Bump
I've always hated the argument "The book is ALWAYS better than the movie". Whenever a movie or TV series that is based on a single book or a series of books is released, all the readers of the original work come out of the woodwork to scream about how the book was better, or how the director fucked up the adaptation by changing things. No shit dumbass, it's called an adaptation for a reason. The director and screenwriter are going to take creative liberties to create the movie that both audiences and the creators themselves want. Often times, creating a movie that is 100% faithful to the book just doesn't work for a multitude of reasons, including time constraints, unnecessary scenes, and things that just don't translate well to the screen. It especially bothers me when people, usually English teachers/majors/professors and avid readers say "The book is ALWAYS better than the movie". Fuck off, that is absolutely NOT always the case. There have been many cases where directors have adapted decent/mediocre books and made GREAT movies out of them that were infinitely better than the books (a few examples being the Godfather and the Shining). It especially bothers me because the English teachers I had in high school had absolutely terrible taste in film.
But I haven't read a book cover to cover in years, so what do I know?
It cut unnecessary shit like the twink Lestat created right before Claudia betrays him and Lestat showing up at Theater des Vampire. Plus Louis losing a wife and child is more streamlined than a crazy brother whose mysterious death is never again brought up in any book, at least that I remember.
The Godfather perhaps, as it’s spends about 50% of the book with the singer that’s barely in the film.
Apocalypse Now
Shrek
Every HP film. Rowling's prose is shit and the books are filled with useless subplots.
This
I agree except for not including Dumbledor's funeral in HBP.
