Filtered plebes. The PT is in a time of peace, which is supposed to be a stark contrast to the times of war in the OT. The main conflict starts with something more relatable, but of course action-packed fun and adventure are still just around the corner.

What did 1 have besides the Maul fight? Surely 2 having the first giant fight scene with multiple Jedi, Jango Fett (the badass Boba fans wish he was), Dooku, and Yoda fighting with the force and a lightsaber are at least as good.

The war only begins at the end of episode 2. It's mostly about Anakin being a creep around Padme during their vacation and Obi-Wan doing undercover stuff.

Toll roads are a thing, plus from what I can see from the movies it seemed like every system had a certain degree of autonomy in the republic. The republic was probably something closer to the HRE than to modern states. Also, can anyone who knows more about the lore tell me if there are any systems out there that weren't part of the republic? Because the movies never hinted that there were any competing outside powers.

George Lucas decided to try to resurrect those old historical political costume dramas in the same way he resurrected adventure serials. The problem was that the tone was a mismatch for the pulp space opera setting he'd created and the slower pace came off as very, very tedious for Star Wars movies.
