Well, there's your problem, OP: even though he's the protagonist, we as the audience are not supposed to necessarily like daniel plainview, and watching him and his hyperwealthy associates pay drunk scumbags to violently torture and kill the children of union leaders would have been too utterly based for any kino to feature.
The Daniel Plainview character is dead in the book by that point which is why his Jewish buddies are free to act without any morals.
He showed some kindness to Mary Sunday when HW told him that Mary's father beats her when she doesn't pray. He named the well after her and dedicated it to her rather than Eli and brought up the bearings in front of her father Abel as well. Unless this act was just done in spite of Eli and not motivated by kindness.
