It's not, the plot is a complete afterthought and just a pretext for set pieces yet everything after Dubai is utterly forgettable; 1 is still by far the best due to it being a film rather than a flick, while in terms of blockbuster thrills Rogue Nation is the most consistently fun and satisfying; 3 is the one that redefined the franchise and while it's not perfect when it shines it's better than anything in GP and all the post 3 movies feel derivative and formulaic due to Bad Robot overseeing and Cruise becoming afraid of taking risks after 2 nearly broke it. 2 is a gem because it's such an anomaly, a terrible MI but a brilliant Woo kino. GP feels like it's just a variant on 3 with a tourist director, who may be fantastic in animation but comes off as kinda bland in live action directing, while McQuarrie struck the ideal balance between JJ tone but with more polished direction and the more lighthearted Bird vibe but with stronger writing.

MI3 has the best villain of the series and the first film of the series that focuses on the team work which is the entire point of the TV show.

Something about the shape of her eyes feels very European yeah. More Eastern than her native France but it gives her a sultry look.

Which one? Hoffman was great but had no screentime. Crudup was shit and only existed to steal the thunder from Hoffman.

I still liked it though, despite JJ hiring a cameraman with Parkinson's.

Also to defend 3, Vatican heist is in my opinion the best scene in the series and PSH is by far the best villain, maybe the only good one. It has everything that made JJ successful in the first place. It's so playful with narrative techniques, emotionally intense. The whole movie has this strange sense of urgency and energy. We love to shit on him now because fundamentally he doesn't belong on scifi blockbusters, but what he did with Alias and Lost he really was a fresh voice. It was his first movie, on a genre he excelled at, and he actually gave a shit, while Cruise was also at that point where he realized he needed to refocus or he'd crash and burn.

You can tell it was made not by a director but by a writer; but not just a writer, a showrunner, that's a very different skillset, and something Cruise desperately needed after 2. McQuarrie for instance is first and foremost a movie writer. Tight story, plot beats, etc everything's clean, self-contained; what JJ did with 3 was successfully make Hunt human and relatable, made that world bigger. Everything he learned about what works and what doesn't on Alias he applied on MI. The series is still successful today because it's still following what he established.
