Be honest, what was your reaction the first time you saw this pop up on screen?

No one actually thought this realistically represented a black person back in the day, right?
Is this mike pence?

Southern hicks were too stupid to tell the difference back then. There's actually quite a few records of white racists in blackface being lynched accidentally. Scenes like these in Mad Men are actually making fun of white southerners
Yes
No, it just sort of became a staple of the performance.
People like Al Jolson were great performers in their own right, they blackface makeup just became a staple of the genre, like how every dude in metal band has long hair and wears black clothing.
duh, Mad Men was making fun of white people in its entirety.
No it was always a vaudeville joke and it was generally applied in such a way (candy red lips) that most southerners where these performances were popular knew that black people didn't actually look like that, it was a purposeful exaggeration.
It was hard to show black people on film back in the day because their skin was so dark. What they did was paint white people a light grey so they could have black people in the movie. It looks dumb today but back then you couldn't tell.
>I saw the sunrise today.
>How was it?
>Average.
Is there a more onions show than Mad Men?
I mean that was part of it but there was also just a complete lack of black actors for the industry to use in film back then.
I actually lol’d
Mad Men would throw random curveballs at you all the time, it was great
i laughed
>cares about realistic representation for minstrels
get a load of this retard
I wasn't asking if the minstrel show was trying to be realistic, I was asking if audiences thought it was
No, it was just Jews being extremely bigoted as usual
Well obviously not, the joke is that Roger was playing up a black stereotype. There were black employees at Sterling Cooper even in the early 60s, including a lobby boy that routinely interacted with all the employees at least on a surface level basis.
>There's actually quite a few records of white racists in blackface being lynched accidentally.
Lol provide proof now. Despite what liberals tell you, people weren’t ever just running around hanging every darky they saw. Lynchings were usually the result of blacks committing crimes, as they do. Less blacks were lynched in the entirety of reconstruction and Jim Crowe than are killed in one Chicago summer today. And a quarter of lynchings were whites.
Laughed my ass off. It made my then-arthoe gf uncomfortable, both the scene and how hard and immediately I laughed at it. We broke up like a month later for unrelated reasons but I know that had something to do with it.

Oh so the KKK were just having tea parties?
They mostly did marches and such to show solidarity, against blacks taking their jobs and equally or moreso against carpetbagger whites trying to screw them over economically. They weren’t cartoon villains hanging two negros a day for fun. That myth of nonstop lynchings wasn’t even created until the civil rights era in the 50s-60s with songs like Strange Fruit. The victor writes history.
i thought it was fun and it nothing wrong.
until i came to 4chin and got redpilled.
I'm white as fuck, and I literally thought this was so lame in the "white people lol" kind of way
Slight chuckle
Honestly what is wrong with black face? Why can actors portray all kinds of different characters but you can specifically do black characters?
>uhm akshully the kkk weren't even that bad!
You are a flaming faggot
You’re right, they were cartoon villains who liked being evil and mean just because.
i love blackface, i think its hilarious
i think making fun of peoples races and culture is all in good fun
dave chappelle dressing up as a white person was always hilarious
whys they gotta takes aways mah laughs. without laughs theres only hate, is that what they want?
>waah they said a mean word!
