Rowling fucked up when writing squibs.
It would have been much more compelling if they had been written to be similar to Nulls/Blanks in 40k: They can't perform magic and they emit an anti-magical aura in their immediate proximity.
If that had been the case, it would have made sense to use one as the custodian of Hogwarts, since his presence would dispell the magical pranks and shenanigans the spoiled dipshit students are always getting up to.
