I don’t get it. Is this movie supposed to be good? Or is it ironically good?

It's a solid adaptation of the book and a good film but the DUDE DRUGS fanbase have tarnished its reputation.
dunno I've never watched it sober
too reddit
I like when the cop makes him give him a kiss
You're supposed to watch it while high off your ass.
I'm gonna watch it now. What am I in for

YOURE NOT PORTUGUESE MAN
kino
It's great. You're just a pleb
that's the worst part IMO
Cool visuals, wacky characters, no plot, weird pace, but still great
Also, this movie is one of the few that makes me laugh my ass off... This is just my kind of humor, you know.
Also, great, GREAT script
It’s an experience, with lots of themes of the dark underbelly of America. There’s a ton of stuff to break down and read into.
What is up with that film cover? Looks like a retarded zoomer tier youtube thumnbail/dank meme. "hahaha dae le distort face in photoshop XDDD so fanni"
ERECTING A DISPENSER
It was unironically a different time.
I watched but the message and themes flew right over my head. Can someone please spoonfeed me?
One of my favorite films of all time. The book is great too. There’s a lot more to it than most people give it credit for.
Well said.
nah
It’s been my experience that people I know who have watched the movie don’t get too much out of it unless they have had a similar weird drugged out trip or know about the mythos of Hunter S Thompson.
fpbp
Its a good movie. I have the criterion collection bluray. But I hate druggies IRL and i cringe when i hear the bat country quote
it made me want to do what he did in the movie
The movie is incoherent with the themes of the book. In my opinion it's because of shitty sound design but hey people love the adaption. The book's main theme was Hunter S Thompson's patriotic search for the American dream in one of the most American places (Or at least his view of America) Las Vegas. As he goes there he sees that even in the 70s America had lost it's shred of culture that was previous and had become a parody of itself. Not perverse as it used to be, not as liberal for lack of a better word word. It brings forth this story of a beast of his time learning the cyclical nature of all things and that he and his "American Dream" was an ideal of the past. There's that paragraph about generations and waves crashing in the book that I remember in the film but was made less poignant by showing a drugged out Johnny Depp dancing in front of literal waves with a flag wrapped around him. A shame really because that was the best part of the book
>made less poignant by showing a drugged out Johnny Depp dancing in front of literal waves with a flag wrapped around him.
That was near the beginning of the film when he was describing getting ready for the trip to the hitchhiker you retard. The wave speech was set to stock footage from the 60s.
Yeah you're right I got it mixed up. I haven't seen the film in a year or two
Backdoor beauty?
Kino
I hate to be THAT fag, but it makes more sense if you read the book. Thompson's message gets lost when you're more focused on the visuals. If you like the boom and his writing style in general you'll appreciate the fact that Gilliam nailed the bizarro world that Thompson "sees" his writing is doing the distortion more than the drugs
It was considered Fedoracore but now "fedoras" seem to be replaced by multiple subcultures, I dont know where it fits now.
