cruise is a much higher caliber actor than the original dude, but this isn't one of his best performances. and the whole production just feels so hollow (despite throwing 10x the budget at the problem). the fact that they recast penelope is just salt in the wound because she is so much worse in the remake. in the original, she's extremely compelling, and the audience is right there falling in love with her alongside the protagonist. caring about her character adds a ton of punch to the reveal later. in the remake she's just, eh.
