I'm usually on the side that this kind of shit shouldn't fly, but at least this episode there is SOME reason for the sex. Apparently for both of them this is the first relation they had with a person of the same level. For Homelander, in particular, we know he desires above almost everything else to connect with someone like him.
For all we know, this might genuinely be the first time those two even felt pain.
Though I agree this and a few other shots were beyond the line of justifiableness.

Season 1 was darkly humorous. Season 2 is just boring and edgy.
