I think I just realized a pretty cool subtle foreshadow. If you were the Mexican guy and you were so fucked up after that gunfight that you were still sitting in the same place hours after the fight and dying of thirst, why wouldn't you just shoot yourself? Why would you let yourself die of thirst in the cab of a truck instead of just ending it? Perhaps he knew that the rest of the cartel would be coming and he hoped they would rescue him?
